Many factors can lead to data loss. The most common cause is storage media failure. Examples include storage devices that are very old or have been mistreated or dropped. Another common cause is erasing data from a computer, whether it is by accident or by trying to reinstall the operating system when you haven’t backed up your data. Some other factors can be environmental or caused by viruses.

The success rate varies based on the type of data recovery.

For example, if you deleted your data or had a virus delete your data, the success rate is very, very high. If you erased your operating system or formatted your machine, the success rate is very high. If your hard drive has errors, a technician will speak to you specifically about your service. The success rate can be very, very high to poor. If your machine was on a cruise ship, that sank 10 years ago, but 1st caught fire and melted your laptop, the success rate is very, very poor.

Also know that some services do not require data recovery if their data is “lost”. Many times we have seen data displaced because another company reinstalled an operating system but did not move the data back, and with viruses, which will hide your data.

Once a technician assesses your machine, they can better discuss how data recovery may or may not help recover your data.

We can attempt data recover on any media.

Some examples include
-Hard Drives
-Key Drives or USB Drives or Flash Drives
-Solid State Drives
-Camera Memory
-CD, DVD, Blu-Ray discs
-Floppy Disks
-Zip and Jazz Disks
-Cameras
-iPods, iPads, iPhones, Smartphones and their media
and more

There are 3 types of data recovery.

1st is finding data that was misplaced or moved. Flash Tech does not charge a data recovery fee for this type of service. It falls under our standard service rate.

2nd is software data recovery. Examples of this are deleting files or formatting your computer. This is done at our location on our machines. Once we recover data, the data is transferred to our computers. We will contact you with the data we recovered and discuss options to transfer the recovered data. Usually people have external hard drives or a computer to transfer the data.

3rd is hardware data recovery. This requires the media to be taken apart in a clean room. For example a hard drive platter would be removed or a solid state drive would be opened to access the storage chips. This type of recovery is usually very successful, but is much more expensive than software data recovery.

The most important thing is to have a backup (multiple backups is preferred) of your data. We have a separate article explaining backups here. Other than having a backup that you can restore, the 1st thing to do is check your “Trash” or “Recycle Bin”. When you delete a file, it goes to the “Trash” or “Recycle Bin” where it is stored until you empty them. It is not deleted until you empty the “Trash” or “Recycle Bin”. Even after you empty them, your data still isn’t deleted. We can attempt to recover the data as long as the space where the file lives is not overwritten. Yes, we can. Whether it’s a PC or Mac, SATA or PATA hard drive, 2.5″ or 1.8″, SSD or HDD. If it stored data, we can attempt to recovery data. Feel free to Contact Us, so we can answer any of your questions.

Data recovery after a virus attack are one of the most successful types of data recovery. The first step is to remove the virus from your computer. Once the virus is removed, we can attempt data recovery. If a virus deleted files on your machine, it does so similar to how you would delete a file on your computer. If the area where the file was stored was not overwritten, data recovery will recover the file.

The best thing to do after getting infected is to discontinue using your computer. The main reason is to prevent the virus from spreading on your machine or other devices on your network. Secondly, to prevent areas where files were deleted to be overwritten.
