SPILLS!

If you spill something on a device such as a laptop, phone or tablet, there are a few things you can do to minimize or prevent damage.

First, turn off the device and unplug anything that is attached to it. Next, take out the battery (if possible) to eliminate any chance of a charge going through the machine. After that, you should try to wipe the keyboard and anything visibly wet using paper towels. Then turn the device upside down for at least 24 hours to try and drain as much liquid as possible. Letting the liquid sit in the device will just make the problem worse.

You can also try putting the machine in a bowl of rice or silica packets to absorb the moisture. When using rice, some rice might get stuck in the openings in the computer and possibly cause more damage. Silica packets can be found online, in some food packages, shoes, pill bottles and clothes just to name a few. The silica packets can be stored in a zip-lock bag until you need to use them. When using the silica packets, try to keep the computer in a sealed container so the silica can absorb as much moisture as possible.

If soda, juice or alcohol is spilled on the machine there is a greater chance of corrosion on the motherboard because of the carbonation and alcohols. Also, the sugars in those liquids may stick to the motherboard and often cause keys and components to “stick”.

The machine should be assessed at a service center to address damage and for a more thorough cleaning.  Feel free to contact us today.
