HDD VS. SDD

We are commonly asked for ways to improve performance and boot times of computers.  One way to squeeze more performance out of an older machine or gain the full benefits of a new one is to upgrade to a solid state disk (SSD).

A hard disk drive (HDD) uses spinning disks and a control arm to read/write data, similar to the way a record player spins with the needle reading the bumps on a record to produce sound.  Over time, HDD’s have improved drastically to provide additional storage, more speed and less cost to the consumer.  The average HDD in the year 2000 was around 40GB and cost more than $200.  Today, you can buy a 1TB (1,024GB) HDD for less than $60.  In that time, HDDs are faster, consume less energy and have the potential to last much longer.  The average home user will likely replace their computer long before they run out of storage.

New software is regularly released with higher hardware demands.  With better, faster video cards, memory chips, processors and other hardware, the HDD can sometimes become a bottleneck.  Replacing your HDD with an SSD can greatly improve boot times and general performance.  An SSD doesn’t use moving parts.  This allows it to read and write data around 66% faster than an HDD.  The lack of moving parts also helps to keep the temperature of the machine lower, reduces power consumption, reduces noise, resolves fragmentation issue and improves the overall durability of the your computer (HDDs are quite sensitive).

Unfortunately, these benefits come at a cost.  SSDs are substantially more expensive than HDDs and in much smaller capacities.  A 512GB SSD costs between $250 and $530, depending on the manufacturer.  There are options to have multiple hard drives in your machine, which allow you to use an SSD for applications to run faster, and an HDD to save large amounts of data.  There are even hard drives that incorporate the technology of both types of drives in one.
