What are some ways to maintain my printer?

With the ability to email, text and keep an electronic copy of everything, we seldom need to print anything anymore.  For some, printing is still a more convenient and cheaper alternative than paying for photo prints, flyers, etc.  Just like your computer, a printer can develop issues over time and will require maintenance to work properly.  Below are some suggestions on proper printer upkeep.

A common question we are asked is whether or not to use refilled toner/ink cartridges.  We believe refilled cartridges are potentially harmful to your printer and should not be used.  Generally, they are less expensive and work fine, but they sometimes develop leaks and will spill inside the printer, possibly causing permanent damage.  Refilling an ink/toner cartridge involves creating a hole in the container.  This hole is used to refill the cartridge, but also a way for the toner/ink to spill back out.  Also, most manufacturers will void your warranty if you use refilled cartridges, leaving you to pay for any repairs that would otherwise be covered for free.

Most printers have a maintenance function.  It can be used to clean and align the print heads and bottom plate, check the ink status, and test the nozzles for clogs.  You should run these tests based on how often you print or by the manufacture’s suggestion.  For example, someone who seldom uses their printer (less than 50 pages a month) should run test prints and cleanings once every month or two to keep the nozzles from clogging.  Proper maintenance and care can help save ink and prevent small issues from turning into large ones.

Other issues can occur between a computer and printer preventing the two machines from communicating properly.  Most new printers will communicate either over your network or through a cable connected directly to your USB port.  These connections can be affected by poor network connectivity, a damaged cable, or software conflicts.  If you experience problems printing in your home or office, Flash Tech can address these in our store or at your location.
